Brief History of Andros
Brief History of Andros
The second largest island of the Cyclades Group, with Chora as its capital, has always been a major commercial and economic center, since the Cycladic civilization era. The first inhabitants have roots from the west coast of Asia Minor. Ancient cities such as Zagora and Paleopolis, whose ruins can be seen and visited, were created and flourished in the classical and Hellenistic period.
Roman rule did not change the island. During the Byzantine period, Andros received many pirate raids. Later Andros passed into the hands of Venetians and Turks and was finally liberated with the rest of Greece in 1826. During the 19th century, Andros developed a large fleet that expanded even further in the 20th century.
